I have delved a bit deeper into this champions cup semi final and have 3 clips where I believe the game was won and lost. It wasn’t individual moments but more a feeling and understanding of what matters in big games and how you come through them. Bordeaux have experience in the champions cup both losing and winning as a group which showed in how they defended their own line and being clinical when it mattered, Bath I felt show an element of Premiership naivety. You can’t just outscore this top European teams you have to kick effectively, defend and attack well. The psychological difference when you make a team earn every point, or force them to create magic is huge. The attacking team feel a defensive team that won’t give an inch and over time the attack will make mistakes forcing it. The impact is impossible to measure but I know from playing in these games the difference is dramatic. When you know chances will come in attack you can be relaxed and patient but when you feel you may only get one chance and you don’t nail it, the panic, fear and desperation set in, this is where you don’t play with composure and make consistently good decisions. It is where score boards get away from you and you chase games, which in big arenas, huge games, against top teams is never a good place.
